GIF2JPG.ZIP will compress and/or expand .gif files to save Hard Drive
space, modem time and long distance charges. The disadvantage is you
can't view .jpg files directly, you must convert them back to .gif
files. That can be done with the same program. You may also specify
compression ratio, though that the smaller the ratio, the poorer the
quality of the file when it is uncompressed again. The default is a
ratio of 55. Anything lees may be selected, but at the expense of of
a poorer re-expanded file.
I ran a test on 3 files
CHEETA.GIF 64896 \
KITTY.GIF 58368 - } BEFORE compression - all 640x480x256 colors
CLOWN.GIF 51200 /
CHEETA.JPG 28257 \ / 57%
KITTY.JPG 17875 - } AFTER compression --savings of { - 70%
CLOWN.JPG 21708 / \ 58%
CHEETA.GIF 63626 \
KITTY.GIF 55068 - } AFTER un-compression -still 640x480x256 colors
CLOWN.GIF 55133 /
So yes, there was a difference to the computer, but to the naked eye, I
couldn't tell the difference in the files from before and after. You
can't view them compressed, you have to uncompress them again with
jpg2gif.exe. But if you're not blowing them up with a magnification
process after, there's virtually no way to tell the difference!
I have zipped these results and the files together on my board for
anyone to download. Just complete the questionaire and you have full
access to download GIF2JPG.ZIP and what few files I do have on-line.
But
this one is called COMPGIF.TST as the gif files will be included in
original form and is also available to anyone who completes the
questionaire! I'm not a .GIF expert. But I had to delete 20 megs worth
of
.gifs to make room for my ANSI files.
Just do me a favor and tell the author where you got it from when you
register! Thanx and CUL8R.
